TCSD’s Nutrition Services staff work hard to make lunchtime the favorite part of every student’s day. From their friendly greetings in the cafeteria and the love they dish out with every student’s meal, to how they encourage kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, our school nutrition professionals are truly heroes. On Friday, May 6, students showed their appreciation for their school nutrition staff as part of School Lunch Hero Day. Students showered their school lunch heroes with cards, posters, paper flowers, song & dance, balloons, gift cards, and love all around.

Between preparing healthy meals, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, our nutrition staff have a lot on their plate. Updated federal nutrition standards for school meals require cafeterias to offer larger servings and a wider variety of fruits and vegetables, switch to whole grains and limit the sodium, calories and saturated fat in each meal. TCSD nutrition professionals have been mixing up the menu and getting students excited about trying the new, healthier choices in school lunch.

School Lunch Hero Day is a nationwide celebration hosted by Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author and illustrator of the popular LUNCH LADYgraphic novel series, the School Nutrition Association and Random House Children’s Books. Inspired by his own childhood school lunch hero, Jean J. Cariglia, Jarrett J. Krosoczka created the popular LUNCH LADY series of graphic novels for kids, starring a crime-fighting school nutrition professional and her faithful sidekick, Betty.

School Lunch Hero Day gives schools and communities the opportunity to thank the school nutrition professionals who serve 30 million students each day. Creative ideas, downloads in English and Spanish and details are available at www.SchoolLunchHeroDay.com.

1/6/2016- Nutrition Services Office has moved!

Did you know that Tulare City School District has over 10,000 enrolled Preschool through 8th  grade students across fifteen campuses? We have grown so much that our Nutrition Services office moved into its own brand new building at the start of the 2015-2016 school year! We are now located behind the District Office on 600 N. Cherry, accessed via the alley to the north of the District Office, with visitor parking available. Nutrition Services is open to the public Monday-Friday from 8am-4:30pm. We are here to assist with meal applications, answer questions about the menu, and help with anything else breakfast or lunch-related for your K-8 child at school.

The department serves breakfast and lunch to all 15 schools and after-school snacks on select campuses.

Further questions can be directed to (559) 687-3189.

District Office staff voted on a healthy selection of art submissions. There is a lot of budding artistic talent out there, and the decision wasn’t easy. 1/22/15- Food Critics for a Day: Mulcahy 7th graders wanted to get involved in choosing their lunch options! They researched regulations, came up with new choices, and surveyed their entire school to select new possibilities for future lunch menus. At the conclusion, select students were invited to attend the Valley Food Show, on January 14th, and be food critics for a day. They gave valuable input on the sight, smell, and taste of the food options and went home STUFFED!
